Douglas Craig Emhoff (born October 13, 1964) is an American lawyer who is the 2d gentleman of the Us.[i] He is married to the 49th vice president of the United states, Kamala Harris. As the start-ever husband of a vice president, Emhoff is the showtime 2d admirer in American history. He is likewise the first Jewish spouse of a vice president.[2]
Emhoff began his career as an amusement lawyer. He was managing managing director of Venable'south West Declension offices and later became a partner at DLA Piper. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Georgetown University Law Center.
Early life and pedagogy
Douglas Craig Emhoff[iii] was born on October thirteen, 1964 in the New York Urban center borough of Brooklyn, the son of Jewish parents, Barbara and Michael Emhoff.[4] He has a brother Andy and a sister Jamie.[5] From 1969 to 1981, he grew up in Matawan and Old Bridge Township, New Bailiwick of jersey, and attended Cedar Ridge High School.[6] His family were congregants of Temple Shalom, a Reform synagogue in Aberdeen Township, at which Emhoff became a bar mitzvah in 1977.[seven] The following summer, in 1978, Emhoff attended Camp Cedar Lake in Milford, PA where he was voted "nigh athletic" of his segmentation at age 13.[7] When he was 17, he moved with his family to California,[8] where he graduated from Agoura High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Northridge and a Juris Dr. from the USC Gould Schoolhouse of Law in 1990.[9]
Career
Emhoff is an entertainment litigator and began his career at Pillsbury Winthrop's litigation grouping. He moved to Belin Rawlings & Badal, a bazaar firm, in the tardily 1990s. He opened his own firm with Ben Whitwell in 2000, which was acquired by Venable LLP in 2006. His clients included Walmart and Merck,[10] and he became manager of Venable's West Declension offices.[11]
Emhoff joined DLA Piper as a partner in 2017, working at its Washington, D.C., and California offices.[12] [13] Following the announcement that his wife would be Joe Biden's running mate in the 2020 United states of america presidential ballot, Emhoff took a leave of absenteeism from the firm.[13] Following the Biden–Harris ticket's win, the campaign announced Emhoff would permanently get out DLA Piper prior to Inauguration Day to avoid conflict of interest concerns.[14]
In Dec 2020, Georgetown University Police force Center announced that Emhoff would join the school'south faculty as a distinguished company and as a distinguished young man of the school's Constitute for Technology Constabulary and Policy.[15]
